Check out this Hilgen Pacesetter 1×15 combo, one of the hidden gems of the golden age of American tube amplification.
Built in New York during the 1960s, Hilgen amplifiers have developed a cult following among players and collectors for their unique circuits, outstanding build quality, and rich, harmonically complex tones. While they never achieved the widespread recognition of Fender, Gibson, or Ampeg, those who have spent time with a great Hilgen understand why these amplifiers have become increasingly sought after.
The Pacesetter delivers warm, articulate cleans with a lively, three-dimensional character that responds beautifully to a player’s touch. Push the amp harder and it rewards with rich, organic overdrive, making it equally at home with blues, classic rock, country, roots music, and vintage-inspired tones. The 1×15 configuration offers an ideal balance of fullness, projection, and portability.
Many players describe vintage Hilgens as occupying a tonal space somewhere between a Fender and an Ampeg, with their own distinctive voice and feel. They excel at producing dynamic cleans and smooth breakup while retaining exceptional note definition and musicality.
With its eye-catching vintage styling, point-to-point construction, and increasingly hard-to-find status, the Pacesetter represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a truly unique piece of American amplifier history. Whether you’re a collector searching for an overlooked classic or a player looking for inspiring vintage tone beyond the usual suspects, this Hilgen delivers in spades.
