Check out this truly exceptional 1954 Gibson ES-295, one of the most iconic and visually striking hollowbody electric guitars ever produced. Introduced as Gibson’s upscale counterpart to the ES-175, the ES-295 combined elegant appointments with unmistakable Gold finish styling, creating a model that has become synonymous with the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
Forever linked to legendary players such as Scotty Moore, Danny Gatton, and Joel Paterson, the ES-295 has earned its place among the most desirable vintage Gibson electrics ever built. While undeniably eye-catching, its enduring appeal comes from far more than its appearance. The fully hollow laminated maple body delivers an incredibly lively acoustic response, while the pair of original P-90 pickups faithfully translate every nuance with warmth, clarity, and unmistakable vintage bite. From rich jazz tones to snarling rockabilly, blues, and early rock ‘n’ roll, the ES-295 is one of the most versatile guitars Gibson ever produced.
Completed in late 1954, this example retains nearly all of its original components, including its original P-90 pickups, Kluson “No Line” tuners, long trapeze tailpiece, pickguard, and electronics. The original Grey Tiger tone capacitors were replaced with period-correct NOS Grey Tiger capacitors after the originals suffered lead deterioration, preserving the guitar’s authentic voice. It also features a comfortable mid-’50s “C” neck profile with a dark Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and a professional refret by renowned luthier Dan Erlewine, resulting in outstanding playability.
The original Gold nitrocellulose finish displays the kind of honest wear collectors hope to find, with natural checking, oxidation, and beautifully worn areas throughout from decades of use. The back of the neck has been played nearly to bare wood, giving it an incredibly smooth, broken-in feel. Despite its obvious player wear, the guitar remains remarkably original, with no evident overspray or finish touch-ups, preserving its authenticity and character.
Acoustically, this ES-295 is exceptionally resonant and remarkably loud for a laminated hollowbody. Plugged in, the original P-90s deliver a huge, three-dimensional voice with warm lows, articulate mids, and sparkling highs that make it easy to understand why these guitars remain favorites among serious players and collectors alike.
Included is the original four-latch brown Lifton hardshell case, along with the vintage songbooks that have accompanied the guitar for decades.
The original pickguard is also included. It can be mounted as intended; however, one of the mounting holes is slightly stripped and may benefit from repair if a more secure installation is desired. As it sits, the guitar presents beautifully both with or without the guard installed.
